Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her mother and grandmother. The only child she has. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. She studied secondary education over there while working two jobs. Her dream was to be an English secondary school teacher. However, her dream was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an assistant to teachers she dropped out of college. Being a poet started performing, she was able to perform in live poetry recitals. Later, she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create an ensemble. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. In the Roots performance, she declared her artist status. Following that, she started working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Additionally, she gained experience as a performer on the Canada touring of Broadway musical Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
